Shortwave Notes

The A17 Transmission started on March 17, 2017, and several hundred frequency changes have been introduced for international broadcasters.
There has been a massive migration to the lower frequencies for long-haul multi-hop propagation on frequencies below 14 MHz across darkness or partial darkness paths, due to continuing very low solar activity as Sunspot Cycle 24 passes through its final phase.
This is is a summary of notable frequency occupancies as intercepted here in Melbourne on March 29, 2017, between 1900 and 2000, dominated by short (darkness) path transmissions from Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Shortwave Closures

SW transmissions in English to Asia from the Vatican Radio were closed down on March 24, 2017. Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam continue to broadcast on SW as usual. The Vatican Radio announced in its website that ALL SW services for all areas are being progressively shut down/

Radio Tirana has closed down all of its SW transmissions, effective March 26, 2017. The only SW operations from Albania are the brokered relays of CRI.

Shortwave Challenge!

Here is another Challenge!
This time we explore the 9 MHz and 11 MHz spectrum between 1830 and 1900, which currently provide many opportunities for frequency usage analysis and propagation.
This challenge was on March 7, 2017, from Melbourne.

Shortwave Challenge!

Shortwave Challenge!
Very low levels of solar activity continue, meaning that the available "propagation windows" for frequencies above about 13 MHz have been compressed for long-haul multi-hop transmission paths crossing darkness or semi-darkness regions.
The challenge is to determine the optimum window for your location for the higher frequency bands!
Here in Melbourne, the 9 MHz band currently is "open" for the full 24 hours, yielding many chances for orderly analysis and research into frequency usage
This is a summary of notable occupancies between 2230 and 2300 on March 1, 2017.

On the Boardwalk, near the monitoring site!
This is a summary of notable frequency occupancies observed in the mid-afternoon, 0330 to 0400 on January 27, 2017, at one of my favourite field sites, in Westerfolds Park, at Templestowe, in Melbourne's outer east.
Receiver was the little Eton E5, with two metres of antenna. Some good E-mode propagation from Asia and Pacific apparent.
